Aesthetic Lasers: Cutting-Edge Technology for Plastic Surgery Practices

No matter what your field of specialization is, the decision to invest in your practice should never be taken lightly. Integrating new technologies such as aesthetic laser systems is something that needs to be given a great deal of consideration. And according to Dr. Barry DiBernardo, Medical Director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery in Montclair, NJ, plastic surgeons tend to be especially cautious. “They don’t purchase a lot of devices,” Dr. Bernardo says, “so they spend a lot of time to choose one that will fit with the plastic surgery practice best.”

Aesthetic Lasers: Complementing Plastic Surgery Practices

While plastic surgeons deliver remarkable results with existing procedures, it’s also important to consider the changing face of patient demand. A recent survey from the American Society for Dermatologic Survey indicated that nearly 60% of consumers were considering laser- and light-based energy treatments to reduce wrinkles and tighten the skin. Roughly 50% of consumers were looking for non-surgical energy-based solutions to improve their skin tone or reduce the appearance of scars.

As more patients hear about non-surgical options through the popular media, it’s expected that the demand for these procedures will continue to grow. Word of mouth may also be a contributing factor, as over 95% of those surveyed state that they achieved the results they were looking for from these procedures.

Alternatives to Plastic Surgery Procedures

The importance of an alternative to traditional plastic surgery may also, on occasion, be the best course of action. Dr. DiBernardo tells of one patient in particular. “This patient was a woman in her mid-to-late 50s, and she didn't have loose skin that we could do a facelift on. I call it corrugated skin. It had lines going on multiple directions, so surgery was out of the question. We used the Pearl handpiece—part of the xeo® system from Cutera—and performed a full peel and fractional combination on her, and really improved her skin tremendously.”

Cutera: A Leader in Aesthetic Lasers

Offering non-surgical alternatives as part of your overall business strategy makes sense, Dr. DiBernardo says, but knowing which system to choose means doing your homework. “If you're looking at laser systems,” he states, “you have to look carefully. There are many, many devices out there that are built of poor quality, unfortunately. You want something that's going to work well, last, not give you any problems, and if you're looking and comparing, Cutera is one of the companies you should look into. I’ve been a Cutera customer for over 15 years.”

Systems such the xeo are one reason why Dr. DiBernardi and other plastic surgeons everywhere are expanding their treatment offerings. xeo uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) combines with Nd:YAG and Er:YSSG laser technologies. In addition, Cutera presents a series of events across the country that go beyond technical and clinical information to provide effective strategies designed to help you introduce aesthetic laser technologies into your plastic surgery practice and help ensure that your investment delivers beneficial returns.
